Cyclone Nargis
Cyclone Nargis devastated the Irrawaddy delta on the south west coast of Myanmar (Burma), Friday, May 2, 2008 in the evening. With strong winds between 190 and 240 km / h, Nargis caused major damage across the Irrawaddy delta (Ayeyarwaddy).
The disaster made 138,000 dead and missing persons, 40,000 wounded and more than 2.5 million victims on a total population of 50 million inhabitants.
The cause of the disaster is flooding due to waves and breaking caused by the storm surge as evidenced by the city of Yangon (Rangoon), (4 million inhabitants), which was almost completely covered by the waves. The authorities speak of a tsunami.
Nargis swept the whole families livelihoods overnight, flooding 600,000 acres of farmland, killing up to 50% of animals, destroying fishing boats and sweeping away food stocks and agricultural tools.
